The unit and the rooms are designed
to make the delivery of a baby a joyous - and efficient
- occasion. All stages of childbirth occur in a private
LDRP room (labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum.) This
efficient approach greatly benefits the expectant mom, who
can remain in the same room throughout the birth.
Mothers who deliver by Cesarean birth
are accompanied to the operating room by an obstetrical
nurse. After the birth and recovery from surgery, the mother
returns to the Woman's Health Unit for care.
Beyond the pleasant setting and the
one-room approach, the Woman's Health Unit also is staffed
by a team of specialized nurses. This group makes sure to
take extra time with the moms during each stage of labor,
and offers well-informed follow up education as the parents
prepare for taking the new baby home.
In addition, the unit offers a Wee
Care Program, that provides a "little something
extra" on the occasion of the birth of your child,
and includes items such as a birth announcement, a T-shirt
for the baby, and a dinner for two in the privacy of your
room, complete with candles!
This unique and innovative approach
to childbirth is quickly emerging as one of District One's
signature services because of the friendly, sense-of-community
feeling that is present in this unit.
In addition to the LDRP rooms for vaginal
births, the unit also provides accommodations for a wide
spectrum of women's health services: antepartum testing,
gynecological-related procedures, postoperative care for
surgeries, and care for pregnancy complications.
A lactation consultant provides education,
support, and assistance to nursing mothers. Follow up support
is available to nursing mothers after they are discharged
from the hospital. Breast feeding pumps and supplies are
available for rent or purchase through the lactation consultant.
