What
Is District One?
District One is sponsored by a hospital district which
was created by a special act of the Minnesota State Legislature
in 1959. The hospital district includes eight of the 14
townships in Rice County, as well as the cities of Faribault,
Morristown and Nerstrand. District One Hospital
is owned by the people that reside within this district.
It is a nonprofit general hospital. Property taxes from
within the district, which amount to less than 1% of
total hospital revenues, contribute to operating the
hospital and making capital improvements. The Hospital
opened with 72 beds. The first patient was admitted April
20, 1960. The need for additional beds and services led
to expansion projects in 1970, 1980, 1993, and a major
renovation in 1998.
Today, District One is
an acute care hospital meeting the health care needs of
the 35,000 people which it serves. Staffed by more than
300 employees, District One admits approximately 2,200 patients
and more than 29,000 people utilize outpatient and emergency
services annually.
Educational Affiliations
District One Hospital provides clinical training for a variety
of educational programs. These include Community Health,
Emergency Medical Technicians, Medical Technology, Practical
Nursing, Social Work and various nursing programs.

and Medicaid Services (CMS) and licensed by the State of
Minnesota Department of Health. The laboratory is
